Does Jiu-Jitsu Brings More Success In Life?

The other day I was chatting with one of my private coaching students and we got to talking about Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling and success in life.  He shared this observation with me...

... I've noticed--most of the successful people I've met in life used to wrestle

My student (let's call him Tom) is in sales and is pretty dang successful to say the least.  He teaches other ambitious individuals how to become better salesmen & women.

He noticed--in his mastermind groups with other successful business peeps--they would always relate one aspect of their business or how they attained success back to "I remember when I used to wrestle."

It got me thinking about why that may be and then it hit me...

Jiu-Jitsu, Grappling/Wrestling are the ultimate problem solving sports

How so?

Well, think about it for a second...

You're face-to-face with an opponent that is trying to smash you, slam you to the floor, has you in a compromised position and is likely trying to break your arm or choke you out.

... there's nowhere to run.
... there's nowhere to hide
... you MUST  face your fears.
... and you need to make quick decisions on the fly that always have a consequence.

Much like life.

In life you need to face your fears especially if success is what you're striving for.  You can't run, you can't hide and often times you need to make critical decisions.

I always tell people, Jiu-Jitsu will teach you how to shape every aspect of your life.  And give you a better appreciation of life itself.

Which leads me to the main reason I feel Jiu-Jitsu can lead you to more success in life...

Human interaction and connection

With today's fast paced society--there is very little human interaction and more often than not, we seclude ourselves from the world.

I've been guilty of this so many damn times. Like at the end of a long day (or week), I just want to stay home, do nothing and be to myself.

Trust me, I'm working on this!

Now I don't know all the science and psychology behind it but I've literally talked and trained with hundreds of people that have shared with me--how Jiu-Jitsu has helped them:

  • Handle depression and overcome suicidal thoughts.
  • Improved their marriage and communication with their spouse.
  • Advance their career
  • Become a better father to their children

and many other awesome stories.

This is just my opinion but, I believe this has more to do with human interaction and connection. Than it does with the health benefits of Jiu-Jitsu.

Here's why...

Life and death are literally in the palm of your hands...

and you begin to appreciate life just a little more because in a split second with the mere snap of your hip--you can change someone's life.

If we can get back to having more appreciation for the value of LIFE, the world will be a better place.

This mentality of appreciation will help us serve more people.

"You can have everything you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want in life."
~ Zig Ziglar

This is the way to success and I know, Jiu-Jitsu will help save the world by giving us a better appreciation for the value of life.

Which is why I'm on a mission to help my fellow BJJ brothers and sisters improve their strength, mobility and endurance for BJJ...

So they can train Jiu-Jitsu for life and change the world!

Gotta run.
