‘Mat STRONG!’ page 2 - Strong As Hec

"... I need MORE conditioning!"

Don't get me wrong, conditioning is important.

Actually... it's VERY important in Jiu-Jitsu.

But.

... if you're training 2+ days per week... you'll receive most (if not all) the conditioning you'll ever need from the mat.

After all.

Jiu-Jitsu IS conditioning in and of itself which brings me to the differences between...

Exercise-induced response vs. hormonal-induced response for endurance...

Training endurance for BJJ can be tricky because.

Jiu-Jitsu is endurance.

More often than not...

...many BJJ players think (I used to think this way too) they need high intensity interval training (High reps with little to no rest) to improve endurance for BJJ when in reality...

It does more harm than good.

It's easy to try and push the pace every session. Which includes physical training on and off the mat.

The mindset is

"... if I can get comfortable training under fatigue, I'll improve my endurance (and Jiu-Jitsu)."

Friend, this is a destructive mindset for strength training.

There will be a time when you need this type of psychological training, but it must be saved for the mat [ONLY].

Let's take the kettlebell snatch for example.

(... pound for pound the best endurance exercise on the planet.)

Trying to peak endurance for BJJ with the snatch... following a "HIIT" approach only results in more fatigue.

And as Saulo Riberio says...

"If you get tired... you die!"

(... which leaves you thinking you need more conditioning. It's a vicious cycle.)

The reason 'HIIT' is a poor strategy for BJJ is because.

It's an exercise-induced response to endurance meaning...

You will improve endurance only for that particular exercise.

This is called, the "S.A.I.D Principle."

In other words... your body will only get good at snatching because... it's the demand you're asking your body to adapt to.

Make sense?

When you think about it.

This would be a hormonal-induced response... FOR SNATCHING!

And...

You need a hormonal-induced response to for Jiu-Jitsu.

... and this will only come from training... you guessed it... Jiu-Jitsu.

More time on the mat.

More drills.

... and more sparring.

This... is the only way to improve your endurance for Jiu-Jitsu so you can roll more often, win more matches, and get injured LESS.

Won't most trainers and coaches won't tell you is...

the more complex and stressful life is, the more simple your strength training needs to be!

Jiu-Jitsu is a VERY complex art.

... and each year brings a new technique, transition sequence, etc.

And sometimes...

A WHOLE NEW GAME COMPLETELY.

The more complex your BJJ training is, the simpler your strength training OFF the mat should be.

The more simple and fewer moving parts, the better.

Which brings me to the importance of...

"training contrasts" and how they peak performance.
